After another unfortunate school shooting in Parkland, FL, where 17 innocent lives were tragically lost. The subject of gun control has come back into the conversation. Several State Representatives have endorsed the idea of giving guns to school educators to defend themselves.
Almost immediately after the school shooting, N.C. Rep, Larry Pittman, spoke on his plan to prevent school shootings by arming teacher with guns, suggesting “We have to get over this useless hysteria about guns and allow school personnel to have a chance to defend their lives and those of their students.”
On Thursday, White People’s President, Donald Trump, made statement that he would “give them a little bonus” to train teachers who will carry guns and these training sessions would be federally funded.
It does not surprise me that the federal government can find the funds to train educators to carry a gun and give them a bonus for it but have yet to find the funds to prevent crowded classrooms, outdated learning materials, and shortage of supplies.
The average class size for a teacher can range from 20-30 students and not forgetting middle and high school teachers who have 4-6 classes per day. Not to mention that teachers put in more than 400 hours of overtime per year and over $500 per year on additional school supplies for their students.
They do all of this and only make on average of $56,433 and 30% of them have a second job to support their own families. Teaching is the longest and most unappreciated profession.
After school shooting incidents like this, the NRA follows with its usually line of “the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” They have said they support deeper background checks and keeping guns from people with mental issues but they are split on the issue of arming school personnel with guns.
I believe that is idea is ludicrous. I find it applauding that the leader of this country can find money in its budget to train and arm teachers but to give them a proper living wage or to give money to the schools for new learning materials and supplies.
There are many amazing teachers but there are also a lot of shitty one; just like police officers. We give trained police officers guns to protect us, and we still have those who use that gun to bully and murder innocent adults and children ALL THE TIME! There have so many innocent of teachers mistreating students without having the option of assaulting them with a weapon.
The issue that we are facing is too many people have guns, who should not. I don’t believe the NRA, in that we should give more guns to good people. It is no secret that America has a gun problem; it is too damn easy for anyone to get one. WE NEED TO WORK ON THAT.
I don’t really care about your right to bear arms, when there are children who are afraid to go to school, parent who feel the need to buy bullet proof backpack to send their child to get an education, and underpaid educators who now have to worry dying while trying the teach. Arming teaching can create an uncomfortable learning environment and hinder the students’ ability to learn.
This idea could become a slippery slope. Next thing you know someone is seriously suggesting to arm the students with guns so they can protect themselves. The problem is the people who go into these institutions and decide to cause hysteria and that they have easy access the weapons they need to do it.
Please share this blog post and your thought and ideas on this issue. I would love to hear your point of view. Thanks for reading!
