This week in America is really tripping, Alabama's Republican Governor signed an abortion ban into law. This ban is the strictest abortion ban; making performing abortions a felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison with no expectations for rape or incest. The law only makes exceptions for medical emergencies and is very specific on what classifies as an emergency.
The Alabama Senate (ALL MEN) passed this law on Tuesday night and Gov. Kay Ivey signed on Wednesday morning stating "…every life is a sacred gift from God."
What Gov. Ivey, the idiot Senators in Alabama, and anyone else who supports this ridiculous bill does not understand is, this law will not abolish abortions but only legal and safe abortions. This will increase back-alley abortions, which uses non-sterile equipment and unsafe medical procedures that are harmful.
It is always surprising to me when I see republicans championing for abortion bans and pro-life laws when they also want to get rid of or cut government-funded assistance like WIC, Medicaid and other programs. So, the government wants to make sure you have carried the baby to full term and delivered it but holds back on helping and supporting you once the baby gets here.
As if this law wasn't bad enough, the Republicans are looking to use this law to challenge Roe vs. Wade. As we all know, Roe vs. Wade is that landmark case of 1973 that we all learned in school. The case provided our fundamental "right to privacy" that protects a pregnant woman's liberty to choose whether or not to have an abortion. This case also ruled that during the first-trimester government could not ban abortions at all but could make health regulations for the 2nd trimester.
Georgia is the sixth state to sign the 6-week abortion ban, which they are also calling the "heartbeat bill"; because the heartbeat can be heard at that time. These laws and the Alabama Law go against the already precedent ruling of Roe vs Wade, which they are trying to take back to Supreme Court.
Many medical professionals state medical and clinical abortions are some of the safest medical procedures - when done by trained medical professionals - with a safety and success rate of 90+ % when done during the first trimester of pregnancy (which is around 12-13 weeks).
This is a war on women's reproductive rights!!
If someone is pregnant, especially if they are impregnated against their will, why would you take more choices away from them? Why would you reinstate a lesson that they have no control over what happens to their body? WHY?!!?!
Even if you don't give a damn about women's rights or you are pro-life and you want a ban on abortions, this is about RIGHTS. My rights. Someone's daughter's rights. Your rights.
Today, they are trying to overturn a case on my reproductive rights; TOMORROW they could be trying to take away your rights. This is a very slippery slope.
As I am writing this blog post, Missouri just passed another abortion ban law.
I cannot stress enough how serious this is!!
These laws will not go into effect for a while, so we still have time!
